Characteristics of the church parish reform in the second half of the 19th century in the parishes of the Yaroslavl diocese

The article examines the implementation of the parish reform stipulated by the Imperial Decree “Regulations of the Board for Affairs of the Orthodox Clergy on the Composition of Parishes and Church Clergy” of 1869 in the Yaroslavl diocese during the service of Archbishop Ionafan (Rudnev). Drawing on materials from the Russian State Historical Archive (reports on the state of the diocese) and publications of the Yaroslavl Diocesan Gazette, the study reconstructs the quantitative dynamics of the parish network, changes in the staffing of clergy, and measures taken to reduce the number of supernumerary clergy. It is shown that the practical implementation of the Regulations encountered serious personnel and financial difficulties, exacerbated conflicts of interest between diocesan authorities, clergy and laity, and also required consideration of regional specifics. Particular attention is given to the role of parishioners in maintaining parishes and clergy, the flexibility of the administrative strategy, and the limited results of the reform, which led not so much to a rigid unification of the parish network as to its adaptation to local socio‑economic conditions.
